One. High five, self! You kept a tiny human alive. Nicely done.
Tw0. Are we raising a good person?
So you’d think that once kids are past the fragile infant stage, worrying about their overall well-being would fade. Alas, you would be wrong. Because toddlers just find more and more ways to scare the bejesus out of you and strain your nerves. For examples, yesterday alone there were two instances where my heart raced because Riley had a death wish. The first he almost flipped head first off of our couch, because of course. The second, we were on a walk by the neighborhood construction site and dude went to peek into a fence and was THISCLOSE from literally poking his eye out because he neglected to see the rogue barbed wire sticking out. After I regained normal breathing our day continued without incident, because you guys, I like Riley’s eyes. I want him to keep them.
So every day when he goes to bed, I silently applaud myself for making it through. And keeping him alive. We’re doing it.
And then we get to my second thing: are we raising a good human?
You guys, with everything that’s been going on in the world lately, more and more I know that it’s important that I am raising a kind and decent young man. I know that Riley is only a toddler, but it is on my mind constantly.
I know he learns by example and I am trying to be that good example. And so is Matt and so is every other person in Riley’s life. I honestly know that I shouldn’t be thinking about this daily, but I am.
Our country is in a weird place. And I want to raise a man who will be compassionate and caring. A man who knows right from wrong. A man who knows how to treat women. A man who will respect others. A man who will help make the world a better place.
These are the things I think about. Motherhood has made my brain weird. And more stressed than it needs to be, ha.
But that’s okay.
Here’s to parenthood and adulting and straight out humaning.
Do you stress about weird things? Is everything confusing you right now too?
